Look at this beauty!! Pomegranates are often revered as the “divine fruit” per Ayurveda. Native to India, it is considered to be an important fruit-medicine as everything from bark, flowers, leaves, peel and of course the sparkling jeweled seeds are all edible and used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine.

This fruit symbolizes both fertility and prosperity.

I love this fruit, once I get started on these juicy and delicious ruby colored jewel- like seeds, there is no stopping, for me  Pomegranates are tridoshic, per Ayurveda and especially cooling for pittadosha. Looking at this bright red color, you get the clue that it nourishes the blood tissue (rakta dhatu) and strengthens the liver. Keep in mind, pomegranates are astringent by nature which leads to a drying effect, so vata dominant folks be mindful when eating this fruit.

Health Benefits of Pomegranates

1.Controls Body Weight

2.Regulates Cholesterol

3. Stops Plaque Build up in Blood Vessels

4. Improves Blood Flow to the Heart

5. Helps Prevent Arthritis

6. Good Source of Fiber

7. Protects Skin

8. Well-known Aphrodisiac

9. Maintains Healthy Levels of Estrogen

10. Helps in IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Today, I was in a mood for a sweet fruit smoothie, and decided to give a try with these vibrant cheerful organic pommeys sitting on my counter. This smoothie is so simple, in fact there is no recipe to this…Blend away in Vitamix. The seeds are crushed amazingly good and you don’t taste any fiber…just wholesome goodness!!

1 handful of organic Pomegranate Seeds

2-4 Mint Leaves

1/4 cup Water

Fresh pomegranate smoothie tastes so much better, than store bought. The taste of tart and sweetness is rightly balanced as nature intended it to be. You may be wondering why is my smoothie in the photo, not looking bright red in color, that’s because of the froth that is collected at the top, thanks to the super-power blades of Vitamix and also it’s not juice it includes all the good fiber of the seeds which makes the color pale.

I always prefer smoothies to juices as you get to consume the fiber which keeps you full for a longer period of time and also helps in regular good bowel movement.

Pomegranates are one of the most powerful, nutrient dense foods for overall good health. They are in season now from fall thru winter, make them a part of your daily diet!
